THE KINGSNAKE
Illustration, InDesign, Formatting
The Kingsnake is author Robert Hampton's debut novel. In collaboration, I volunteered to format the text and illustrations, create the cover, spine, and back, as well as print the final copy.

OBJECTIVE
Hampton desired a classical feel to his novel. The task was to bring his vision to life, and through a series of cover iterations, typographic exploration, and discussions with the author, we would achieve a final product. We worked closely to perfect his debut novel—the Kingsnake.
The Kingsnake is historical fiction, taking place in the historical nineteenth-century American west.
MOOD BOARD

IMAGE EDITS
Artwork's created by Robert Hampton were scanned and edited to achieve a deeper and darker coloration. Further, Hampton desired that all drawings retained their "hand-drawn appearance"

TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATIONS

After several rounds of exploration, Tribute OT suited the body copy most properly.
Tribute OT is a unique serif typeface that recalls Guyot and a Renaissance Antiqua.

Hampton desired a slab-serif typeface for the body copy. He was presented with a series of different typefaces in the same layout. Ultimately, we decided on 12 pt. Tribute OT as the body copy.
SLEEVE EXPLORATIONS
After several rounds of iterations, Hampton approved a design that omitted the horse illustration and special glyphs and incorporated hints of red.
